Digital x-ray at your yard
Our portable digital x-ray equipment means we take radiographs at your yard. Images appear on screen within seconds, so your vet can review them with you on site and take extra views if needed.
When x-rays are used
- Investigating lameness in the feet, joints and bones
- Checking for fractures after a kick, fall or injury
- Monitoring the position of the pedal bone in horses with laminitis
- Foot balance, working with your farrier on trimming and shoeing
- The back and neck, for example when investigating kissing spines
- Pre-purchase examinations, when requested by the buyer or their insurer
Some areas, such as the pelvis, need hospital equipment, and we’ll arrange referral.
Preparing for x-rays
- A clean, dry, well-lit area with a hard, level surface, so your horse can stand square
- Feet picked out and clean; we’ll warn you if shoes need removing
Light sedation helps your horse stand still, giving clearer pictures with fewer exposures.
Radiation safety
We follow the Health and Safety Executive’s rules for radiography of animals under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17). Before imaging begins, we set up a controlled area around the horse. Everyone involved is issued protective equipment, such as lead gowns and gloves, and a dosimeter to monitor exposure. Anyone who doesn’t need to be there, including children and pets, should stay well away.
Results and sharing images
Images are stored on your horse’s records. With your permission we can send them to your farrier, insurer or referral vet.
