COVID-19 Update 24/3/2020
In line with the Prime Minster’s statement last night and the advice of both the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and our industry association BEVA this morning, we are updating our coronavirus precautions. We expect that all local equine veterinary practices will shortly be issuing similar advice.
Effective immediately, we are now restricted to providing emergency services only. Please be assured that when your horse truly needs us, we are ready and able to respond for you 24 hours a day. However routine appointments, such as vaccines, pre-purchase examinations and low grade lameness examinations must now be postponed. This is a fast-moving situation which we expect to review regularly.
TELEPHONE AND VIDEO CONSULTS DURING THE LOCKDOWN
Many of you will be worried about ongoing medication in cases of chronic illness, or worried about what does and does not constitute an emergency. The welfare of both you and your animals through this period is our prime concern.
We are therefore going to trial consulting remotely. This has been something of a legal grey area for vets, but we feel that providing this service to you now is easily justified.
For the time being, we have decided not to charge you for this service – just call the office number (01270 66 00 14) and we will arrange for the duty vet to call you back at an assigned time. Our vets will be using WhatsApp and/or Skype to provide video consults, so please make sure you have one of these apps installed on your phone. We may ask you to record video or make a video call so that we can direct you ‘live’.
Please make sensible use of this service, as we are operating at substantially reduced capacity. Bear with us through any teething problems, as we are new to this too! If remote prescription is justified or a visit warranted, this will be arranged on the call.
PLEASE PROTECT OUR ABILITY TO PROVIDE YOU WITH AN EMERGENCY SERVICE WHEN YOU TRULY NEED US
At present, none of our vets are having to self-isolate. Where physical examination of a patient is absolutely necessary, please do your best to ensure that everyone with your horse is free from COVID-19 symptoms and has no reason to be self-isolating. Ensure good hand hygiene and practice social distancing.
Please, please look after yourselves. Equestrianism is a high risk pursuit at the best of times, but now is not the time to be making unplanned visits to A&E. Don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger; wear your hats around your horses; now more than ever look out for your own health and safety.
We look forward to seeing you all again on the other side of this crisis, and tutting about the fuss.
All our love,
Team Tom Walters
