Equine dentistry at your yard

Horses’ teeth keep erupting and wearing throughout their lives, and sharp edges, hooks or loose teeth can cause discomfort long before you see a problem. Regular dental care keeps your horse comfortable, eating well and happy in the bridle.

What we offer

Our vets carry out dental examinations and treatment at your yard, including:

  • A thorough examination of the whole mouth, using a gag, light and dental mirror
  • Routine rasping with motorised and hand rasps to remove sharp edges and correct overgrowths
  • Removal of wolf teeth
  • Investigating problems such as dropping feed, weight loss, bad breath, head shaking or resistance to the bit

If your horse needs specialised treatment, such as a complicated extraction, we’ll arrange referral.

Why choose a vet for dental care?

As vets, we look at your horse’s overall health as well as their teeth, and we can prescribe, give and monitor sedation. Light sedation keeps most horses calm and comfortable, and lets us examine the back of the mouth properly. If you use an Equine Dental Technician, we’re also happy to sedate and monitor your horse for them; please choose a member of the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT).

On the day

Please have your horse caught, in a clean, well-lit stable. After sedation, keep them off food until we say it has worn off.

How often?

We advise a dental check at least once a year for most horses. Youngsters, older horses and those with dental problems may need checks every six months. We can combine it with your horse’s vaccination visit.
