Ultrasonography

Ultrasound scanning at your yard

Ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to build a live picture of the soft tissues inside your horse. It’s painless, involves no radiation, and with our portable scanner we can scan at your yard and talk you through what we see straight away.

What we use it for

  • Legs and joints: diagnosing tendon, ligament and joint injuries, and checking healing during rehabilitation
  • Swellings and wounds: looking for fluid, abscesses and foreign bodies
  • Chest: checking the lungs and chest lining, for example in a horse with pneumonia or pleurisy
  • Abdomen: helping investigate colic, weight loss and other internal problems
  • Breeding mares: scanning to help time covering or insemination, and to confirm pregnancy

Ultrasound can also be added to a pre-purchase examination if you or your insurer would like the legs scanned.

Preparing for a scan

For clear pictures the area usually needs clipping; if you’d rather avoid this before a show, tell us when you book. Please have your horse clean and dry, in a quiet stable. Some horses need light sedation to stand still.

Results and follow-up

Your vet will explain the findings before leaving. Tendon injuries usually need repeat scans to guide rehabilitation. With your permission, we can share images with your insurer or a referral vet.
